Chinese Brands: BYD, Zeekr, Li Auto, Geely and XPeng
There are more than fifty manufacturers on the Chinese market, and the names often mean nothing to someone used to European or Japanese brands. Below are the five most common ones: what each is known for and who it suits.
BYD
One of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in the world. Its main technical advantage is its own LFP battery, which loses capacity more slowly over the years and carries a lower fire risk. BYD also sells batteries to other manufacturers, which is a good indicator of quality.
Suits: anyone who wants a dependable, long-lived electric car at a moderate price.
Zeekr
Geely's premium sub-brand, focused on fast charging and high equipment levels. Interior quality and materials approach the European premium segment, while the price is considerably lower.
Suits: buyers looking for premium without paying European prices.
Li Auto
Specialises in extended-range hybrids (EREV) - electric cars with a petrol engine acting as a generator. The battery covers daily driving, and petrol takes over on long trips. Dependence on charging infrastructure is minimal.
Suits: drivers who cover long distances outside cities and cannot rely on a charging network.
Geely
One of the most experienced players in the Chinese car industry. It owns Volvo and Lotus, which means shared technology - many Geely models are built on Volvo platforms. Wide choice of petrol, hybrid and electric versions.
Suits: buyers who prefer familiar, proven engineering over experimentation.
XPeng
A technology-led brand, focused on autonomous driving and software. The interior is minimalist, with nearly every function on screen.
Suits: drivers drawn to new technology who do not mind screen-based controls.
How to choose
The choice depends far less on the brand than on two practical questions:
- Where and how much do you drive? Mostly in the city - a pure electric car is comfortable. Frequently outside it - a hybrid or EREV will cause fewer headaches.
- Which trim is it? On the Chinese market a single model can have up to five versions. Battery capacity, drivetrain and equipment differ sharply, and the trim is what decides whether you will be satisfied.
